West Brom 0-1 Stoke City – Match Review
West Brom suffered their third consecutive defeat of the season after Ryan Shotton’s late goal stole all three points for Stoke.
The Potters defender tapped in from close range after pipping Ben Foster to a long ball despite the keeper claiming Shotton kicked it out of his hands.
It was certainly cruel on the home side who had been on top for much of the game but just couldn’t turn their chances into goals. It now leaves them firmly rooted in the relegation zone with no points from their opening fixtures.
Stoke on the other hand maintained their unbeaten start to the new campaign and had Asmir Begovic to thank for keeping the Stoke net untouched.
The Baggies started the game brightly and should have led through Paul Scharner only for his header to find the palms of Begovic. Shane Long also had a glorious chance to break the deadlock but his diving header from Somen Tchoyi’s cross was superbly tipped behind by the big Bosnian.
Stoke’s attack was anonymous until the injury time in the first half with Jermain Pennant having their only real opportunity heading straight at Foster from a Matthew Etherington cross.
Kenwyne Jones was lucky not to see red in the second half after appearing to stamp on Steven Reid. Tchoyi was West Broms main threat and threatened again curling a ball wide from the edge of the area before volleying over not long after.
Those missed chances would come back to haunt the Baggies as Shotton toe poked the ball out of Fosters grasp and rolled into an empty with only two minutes left on the clock.
